23/ Amnesty International: Executions worldwide reach highest level since 2015

London, April 8 (Petra) – Amnesty International revealed in its 2024 annual report on the death penalty that 1,518 executions were carried out in 15 countries, marking the highest number recorded since 2015, even as the number of countries implementing the death penalty remained at its lowest for the second consecutive year.

The London-based organization noted that over 40% of the executions were related to drug offenses, highlighting ongoing concerns over the use of capital punishment for non-violent crimes.

Amnesty International Secretary-General Agnès Callamard described the death penalty as a "cruel practice with no place in today’s world," and criticized its use as a tool to silence dissent and suppress criticism in some states.
