78/ Former Interim Tunisian President Fouad Mebazaa Dies at 91
Tunis, April 23 (Petra) – Former interim Tunisian President and ex-Speaker of Parliament Fouad Mebazaa passed away on Wednesday at the age of 91, according to official media reports. Mebazaa assumed the presidency on an interim basis following the ouster of former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and the subsequent vacancy of the office. Born on June 15, 1933, Mebazaa began his political career during the presidency of Habib Bourguiba and remained active during Ben Ali’s tenure. He held several ministerial posts, including Minister of Youth and Sports and Minister of Public Health. He also served as Tunisia’s ambassador to Morocco and was mayor of Carthage from 1995 to 1997. Mebazaa later became Speaker of Parliament, a position he held until January 15, 2011, when he assumed the presidency temporarily after the collapse of Ben Ali’s regime.
