34/ Jordan is qualified to become leading global tourism destination, says Egyptian archaeologist
Cairo, April 27 (Petra) Prominent Egyptian archaeologist Zahi Hawass said Jordan possesses unique tourism and archaeological assets that qualify it to become a leading global tourism destination, praising the Jordanian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities for its significant efforts to promote national heritage and boost tourism. Speaking to the Jordan News Agency (Petra), Hawass noted that Jordan currently receives around 5.5 million tourists annually, a number he expects to rise substantially with the anticipated opening of new archaeological sites. Hawass highlighted a cooperation agreement signed between his foundation, the Zahi Hawass Foundation for Archaeology and Heritage, and the Jordanian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, which includes launching archaeological excavations in Wadi Rum a site he described as among the most significant archaeological locations globally. He announced that a joint Egyptian-Jordanian archaeological mission will begin excavation work in October, aiming to uncover new archaeological landmarks and organize specialized exhibitions, including one focused on Christianity, which he said would captivate global audiences. Hawass expressed his admiration for Jordan’s achievements in restoration work and the management of archaeological storage facilities. He also praised the unique tourism and heritage potential of the city of Aqaba, describing it as "the most important Arab city for heritage tourism." During his visit, Hawass toured the site of the oldest mud-built church in Aqaba, which is yet to open to the public, as well as a unique Islamic-era city, noting that Aqaba’s exceptional cultural heritage places it at the forefront of Arab heritage cities. Hawass emphasized that Jordan’s continued efforts to develop and preserve archaeological sites would further strengthen its position as a leading global destination for tourism and heritage. //Petra// AF
