25/ US Congress delegation visits Petra

Petra, August 19 (Petra) – A US Congressional delegation visited the ancient city of Petra on Tuesday to explore its archaeological and heritage sites and "closely" examine Jordan's efforts to protect and develop this world historical destination.

The delegation comprised US Senators Markwayne Mullin and Joni Ernst, along with Representatives Jason Smith and Jimmy Panetta.

The visit is part of an official tour in the Kingdom aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in various fields.

The delegates were received by the Chairman of Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA), Dr. Fares Breizat, in presence of members of the Board of Commissioners.

Breizat briefed the delegation on PDTRA's plans for tourism development, aimed to preserve the city's cultural and environmental character, and enhance investment opportunities and international partnerships, which contribute to supporting local communities and developing the tourism sector.

Commending this visit in strengthening Jordan-U.S. cooperation, he noted the existing partnership opens "broad" horizons for exchanging joint expertise and projects that serve Petra and its residents.

The congressional team toured the city's key archaeological landmarks, mainly the Siq and the Treasury, expressing their "deep admiration for Petra's architectural beauty and historical richness."

The delegates also praised the Kingdom's efforts to preserve one of the prominent World Heritage sites.
