26/ Statement issued urges end to attacks on humanitarian workers

Amman, August 19 (Petra) – The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Tuesday called on the international community to take action to end attacks against humanitarian workers.

In a joint statement issued on the occasion of World Humanitarian Day, IFRC President Kate Forbes and ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric revealed that 18 staff and volunteers from the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement have been killed in 2025 while carrying out their humanitarian duties in various conflict zones.

The statement noted that many of the victims lost their lives while off duty, some killed in their own homes and among their families. Others have been injured, kidnapped or arbitrarily detained.

Describing such attacks as a "grave betrayal of humanity," the two leaders stressed the urgent need for global commitment to uphold humanitarian principles.

They emphasised that while declarations of support are important, these must be translated into concrete action on the ground to ensure the safety and protection of humanitarian personnel.
