  37/ EMRC, NCNRS join US-led nuclear security exercise "Dragon Eye"

Amman, Aug 19 (Petra) – The Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC) and the National Center for Nuclear and Radiological Security have begun participation in the "Dragon Eye" field exercise, part of the Jordanian–American program for countering weapons of mass destruction (CWMD), official said on Monday.

The exercise is being held in cooperation with the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) of the U.S. Department of Energy. The National Center for Nuclear and Radiological Security (NCNRS) is managing the drill and directly overseeing the participation of Jordanian institutions, in coordination with relevant national bodies.

EMRC Chairman and head of the NCNRS, Ziad Al-Saaydeh, said in remarks on Tuesday that the two-day exercise aims to strengthen national preparedness and improve institutional coordination in handling potential nuclear security incidents, in line with international standards and best practices on nuclear safety and security.

Al-Saaydeh stressed that the commission’s participation reflects its regulatory and supervisory mandate over the nuclear and radiological sector and its commitment to ensuring the highest levels of readiness and effective response. He emphasized the importance of integration among national institutions in protecting people and the environment while bolstering nuclear security in the kingdom.

He added that the EMRC, through the NCNRS and its specialized regulatory units, is working to build technical and human capacity, training staff in cooperation with local and international partners to ensure effective response in emergency and exceptional circumstances.
