12/ Higher Council for Rights of Persons with Disabilities releases July report
Amman, Aug 23 (Petra) – The Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (HCD) said Saturday it carried out 25 sensory inspections of educational, healthcare, cultural, and security buildings last month to ensure accessibility requirements for persons with disabilities, plus 22 training and awareness programs for 551 participants. In its monthly report on its achievements during the month of July, the council said it addressed 209 complaints and queries through various channels, including social media platforms, the government platform and telephone. It also provided sign language in 17 training workshops and translated 18 awareness films for deaf. The HCD's Equal Opportunity Commission interviewed 23 candidates for employment in the government sector to determine accessibility requirements and arrangements for them in the workplace in accordance with Civil Service Bureau bylaws, the report said. In its efforts to increase specialized terminology, the Technical Committee for the Development of Academic Sign Language introduced 93 new academic sign language terms to provide advanced education tools for deaf teachers and students, it said. The report said the council helped incorporate inclusive tourism concepts into the tourism facilities system, adding standards that ensure independent access for persons with disabilities to tourism facilities and services, and respect for diversity and the dignity of tourists without discrimination. As part of a project to transform the Royal Academy for the Blind into an inclusive school, the engineering team conducted field visits to Ministry of Education schools to monitor environmental preparation work and ensure the transfer of boarding students at the academy to community schools, according to individual transition plans, it said. The Council also implemented quality programs targeting Ministry of Labor staff and beneficiaries in the areas of reproductive health, care, and effective communication. These programs included empowering women with disabilities, raising awareness among older persons with disabilities about their rights, and promoting health awareness through analogue support, said the report. It also mentioned honoring 11 institutions that received accreditation certificates, in accordance with national service standards for persons with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorder. The Council also launched the "Everyone's Camp" initiative, which adopts a comprehensive model to promote the transition towards inclusive community services based on families and communities. Last month, the HCD organized a dialogue session in partnership with the International Labor Organization to promote the integration of persons with disabilities in the garment industry in Jordan. Another session, in cooperation with the Naya Community Network, addressed His Majesty King Abdullah II's speech at the 3rd Global Disability Summit and Jordan's experience in its organization, the report said. In cooperation with the Justice Center for Legal Aid, the HCD ran a specialized training program for lawyers with disabilities, providing them with the necessary legal skills and knowledge, particularly in cases concerning juveniles, domestic violence, and labor law, it said. And in cooperation with the Friendship Association for the Blind, the council launched a project to prepare an interpretive guide for implementing the Marrakesh Treaty, which aims to provide accessible publications to persons with visual impairments, according to the periodic report. //Petra//SS
