13/ Fayez, US House Foreign Affairs Committee member talk ties, region
Amman, Aug 23 (Petra) – Senate President Faisal Fayez Saturday welcomed US House of Representatives' Committee on Foreign Affairs member Joe Wilson to discuss ways to enhance Jordanian-US relations. They also tackled the situation in the region, including Israel's aggression against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank. During the meeting, attended by Senator Suhair Al-Ali, Chair of the Jordan-US Parliamentary Friendship Committee, Fayez stressed the deep-rooted Jordanian-US ties and the Kingdom's keen interest to build on them in various fields and promote bilateral economic and investment partnerships. The Senate Head hailed economic and financial US aid to Jordan, which helped it counter economic challenges imposed by regional conflicts and hosting about 1.3 million Syrian refugees. Jordan is a pivotal country in the region and a symbol of stability, and that protection its security and stability is in everyone's interest, said Fayez, warning that any attempt to tamper with the Kingdom's security will have serious repercussions for the entire region. Fayez spoke about ongoing efforts by His Majesty King Abdullah II to stabilize the region, reach a ceasefire in Gaza and allow the entry of humanitarian aid to the Strip. He said stability in the region is only attainable through establishing a Palestinian state, in accordance with the two-state solution and international legitimacy resolutions. He urged the US administration to exert pressure on Israel to halt the aggression and agree to ceasefire proposals presented by mediators, warning that Israel's aggressive and expansionist policies will perpetuate the cycle of violence and undermine regional instability. Fayez reiterated condemnation of statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and far-right Israeli ministers on so-called "Greater Israel" vision that deemed the west and east of the Jordan River as Israeli territory. Jordan, he reiterated, rejects any proposals to resolve the Palestinian issue at the expense of Jordan, its national principles, and higher interests. "This unwavering position had been emphasized by His Majesty in his three "Nos": "No to an alternative homeland, no to resettlement, and no to forced displacement," he said. He also called Jordan's custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem "a red line." Fayez condemned ongoing Israeli attempts to forcibly displace Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip, reiterating Jordan's rejection of Israeli settlement expansion. He called on the US administration and international community to support His Majesty's efforts to create a political horizon toward a just solution to the Palestinian issue and an end to the spiral of violence in the region. For his part, US Representative Wilson commended the friendship and cooperation between the United States and Jordan, emphasizing the key role by His Majesty King Abdullah II in ending conflicts in the Middle East. //Petra//SS
