25/ Water loss was recently reduced by 6.7 percent, says minister

Amman, Aug 23 (Petra) – Minister of Water and Irrigation Raed Abu Soud on Saturday highlighted key achievements in Jordan’s water sector under the 2023–2025 executive program during a sectoral working session to prepare the second phase of the economic modernization program (2026–2029). The session, held at the Prime Ministry, included experts and representatives from the public and private sectors and follows a series of workshops hosted last month by the Royal Hashemite Court.

Abu Soud said that water loss was recently reduced by 6.7 percent, exceeding the annual target of 2 percent, and water supply increased by 85 million cubic meters. He noted that six months ago, the National Water Carrier project was awarded to the Suez-Meridiam consortium, with early works already underway.

The minister added that contracts were signed with the private sector to operate six wastewater treatment plants in northern governorates, irrigation networks were upgraded, and several wastewater rehabilitation and treatment projects were initiated. He also highlighted the launch of a water and energy data management system to optimize resource use, increase renewable energy integration, and enhance energy efficiency in the water sector, alongside water harvesting projects and construction of desert reservoirs and dams.

Abu Soud outlined ongoing and planned initiatives under the first and second executive programs, including reducing water losses, expanding sanitation services, digitizing water ministry services, improving supply efficiency, advancing the National Water Carrier, removing encroachments on pipelines, and preparing a financial sustainability roadmap for the water sector.

He stressed that these efforts underscore the government’s commitment to implementing the economic modernization vision on schedule, fostering sustainable growth, attracting investment and innovation, and improving citizens’ quality of life.
