17/ Workshop Highlights Parliament’s Role in Political Reform

Amman, Aug. 27 (Petra) – The Jordanian Masarat Foundation for Development and Reform, in cooperation with the German Friedrich Ebert Foundation, concluded a workshop titled "Political Modernization and the Role of Parliament."

The event brought together experts in parliamentary and political affairs, alongside employees from various departments of the Lower House of Parliament.

Participants included the Resident Director of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Jordan, Sven Schwerzenski; Senate Member Mustafa Maharmeh; and Executive Director of Masarat, Talal Ghunaimat.

The first day of the workshop focused on the reality of parliamentary work and the progress of the modernization process, while the second day addressed future trends in political modernization, the role of parliament in that process, and mechanisms to strengthen parliamentary performance and reforms.

Discussions reviewed the challenges facing the national arena and explored approaches to develop parliamentary performance in line with the scope of political reforms currently being advanced by the Jordanian state. The workshop underlined the importance of reinforcing the Lower House of Parliament’s legislative and oversight functions as a pillar of the political reform process and as a means of promoting participation and democracy.

At its conclusion, the workshop highlighted the importance of investing in capacity-building within the Lower House of Parliament and developing legislative and oversight tools to consolidate good governance, safeguard democratic achievements, strengthen public trust in institutions, and expand opportunities for citizen participation in political decision-making.
