45/ Heavy Rains in Iraq Kill Several, Cause Widespread Flood Damage

Amman, Dec 10 (Petra)- Iraq has experienced a wave of heavy rains over the past two days, resulting in several deaths and causing damage in various parts of the country.

The town of Jamjamal, west of Sulaymaniyah, was among the hardest hit due to its low-lying location, hilly terrain, and numerous valleys, which led to water accumulation and the formation of flash floods. Footage showed torrents sweeping through several cities in the region, carrying away vehicles and causing the collapse of a vital bridge used by residents for transportation.

The floods have claimed the lives of five people, while searches for missing individuals are ongoing, and 12 others have sustained injuries. Extensive damage was reported, including the flooding of warehouses, shops, and homes, as well as damage to dozens of vehicles.

The storm disrupted traffic, with residents facing significant difficulties moving due to rising water levels.

In Kirkuk province, Lailan District Director Mohammed Weis reported that a young girl died Tuesday evening after being swept away by floodwaters near her home. Meanwhile, floods on Wednesday caused part of a major bridge in Tuz Khurmatu, connecting Kirkuk and Baghdad, to collapse, according to local authorities.

In the southern city of Hillah, a correspondent for Agence France-Presse reported that floodwaters submerged several streets and entered residents’ homes.
