39/ WHO Warns Progress Against Famine in Gaza Remains Fragile

Amman, Dec. 21 (Petra) – World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that despite progress made in combating famine in Gaza, the situation remains extremely fragile, as the population continues to face massive destruction of infrastructure, the collapse of livelihoods and local food production, and restrictions on humanitarian operations.

In a post on the X platform on Sunday, Ghebreyesus said that more than 100,000 children and 37,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women in Gaza are expected to suffer from acute malnutrition by April 2026.

He noted that 50 percent of health facilities in Gaza are partially operational and are facing shortages of essential supplies and equipment, which often encounter restrictions and complex entry procedures. "To improve life-saving services and expand access to care in Gaza, the organization calls for urgent approval for the entry of essential medical supplies and equipment to hospitals in the Strip," he added.
