33/ UN Security Council holds meeting on Iran nuclear file

New York, Dec. 23 (Petra)- The United Nations Security Council on Tuesday held a meeting on Iran’s nuclear file, during which members heard a briefing from UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo.

DiCarlo said reaching a negotiated settlement that ensures the overarching objectives of guaranteeing a peaceful Iranian nuclear program and lifting sanctions is the best option available to the international community. She added that "despite the significant differences among the concerned parties on how to move forward with regard to Security Council resolution 2231 (2015) and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, all have continued to stress the importance of a diplomatic solution and have expressed a general willingness to engage with one another to that end."

The UN official noted that under the so-called "snapback mechanism," and as the Council did not adopt a resolution to continue the termination of sanctions measures within 30 days of the letter submitted by Germany, France and the United Kingdom regarding commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, previous sanctions on Iran were reimposed on Sept. 27, 2025. She added that several concerned member states rejected the validity and effectiveness of the sanctions reimposition process, while some members specifically affirmed that the process was procedurally and legally flawed.
