Brussels, June 12 (Petra) – Jordan and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on Thursday signed an agreement to host the alliance's diplomatic liaison office in the capital, Amman.

During an official ceremony held at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Jordan's Ambassador to NATO Yousef Batayneh and NATO by Special Representative for the Southern Neighborhood Javier Colomina signed the agreement.

The agreement aims to enhance joint diplomatic communication and political dialogue, mainly by intensifying support and partnership programs for Jordan in the areas of capacity building and addressing challenges.

The future collaboration also seeks to enhance regional mutual coordination and cooperation in areas of security, counterterrorism, crisis management, cybersecurity, civil protection, scientific cooperation, and climate change.

Talking to the signing ceremony, Batayneh said the agreement represents an "advanced" step in the decades-long Jordan-NATO "strategic" partnership.

Selection of Amman to open the first NATO office in the region reflects the Kingdom's "active and pivotal" role in promoting peace, security, and stability in the region, he pointed out.

Colomina, in turn, praised NATO's "distinguished" relations with Jordan, valuing the Kingdom's move to host the office and its "pivotal" role in the region as a "reliable" partner in various fields.

Jordan, which is a NATO key partner outside the alliance, benefits from numerous programs and initiatives aimed at enhancing defense and civil capacity building and coordination in facing challenges.
