20/ Parliament committee discusses Jordan-EU cooperation, region

Amman, March 13 (Petra) – Lower House Foreign Affairs Committee, headed by MP Dina Basheer, met Thursday with European Union Ambassador to Jordan Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas, to discuss bilateral relations and avenues for enhanced cooperation.

To end the Middle East crisis, the committee members noted His Majesty King Abdullah II's efforts, alongside world leaders, to revive the comprehensive peace process to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, based on the two-state solution.

The MPs underscored the importance of the Jordan-EU "strategic" partnership and the need to expand collaboration across various sectors.

MPs Ibrahim Tarawneh, Mohammad Aqel, Rakin Abu Haniyeh, Tamara Nasser Al-Din, and Nour Abu Ghosh reaffirmed Jordan’s rejection of forced displacement and any proposal to establish a Palestinian state outside the occupied territories.

The lawmakers also reiterated support for Syria’s reconstruction efforts and creation of conditions for the voluntary return of Syrian refugees.

Additionally, they commended European support for the Hashemite custodianship over Jerusalem's Islamic and Christian holy sites and the EU’s backing of King Abdullah II’s efforts in defending the Palestinian cause.

Stressing the importance of the "comprehensive and strategic" Jordan-EU partnership, they noted its potential to drive economic growth, attract investment, and support key sectors.

Meanwhile, Chatzisavas affirmed that Jordan and the EU will continue their "intensive" diplomatic engagement to align positions on critical international issues.

The EU envoy underlined the importance of "fully" implementing the "new strategic" partnership, focusing on political, defense, trade, and development cooperation and addressing the refugee crisis to maximize benefits of the €3 billion support package.
