14/ Authorities to deport 'working' foreign students next April 1

Amman, Mar. 16 (Petra) – Ministry of Labor announced its plans to deport any working "non-Jordanian student, grabbed in violation of the Jordanian Labor Law, "under any circumstances," starting next April 1.

In a statement on Sunday, the ministry's spokesperson, Mohammad Zyoud, coordination is underway with Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to address all public and private universities and community colleges to rectify status of the target violators.

Under this effort, he noted international students will be notified that their recruitment in the labor market constitutes a "clear" violation of the provisions of the Jordanian Labor Law.

The labor ministry, within a joint inspection campaign with the Ministry of Interior and the Public Security Directorate (PSD), has arrested "numerous" university students of both genders and various nationalities since the beginning of the year, he pointed out.

Zyoud noted foreign university students must adhere to the rules in place, which ban them from joining the Kingdom's labor market.

On penalties, Zyoud stated any employer who recruits an overseas student will pay a fine of no less than JD800 for each student.

At the local level, he said the ministry is continuing its inspection campaign to arrest non-Jordanian workers, who violate provisions of the Labor Law.
