22/ IFJ: 99 journalists, media workers killed in 2025 amid rising impunity

Amman, November 3 (Petra) – At least 99 journalists and media workers have been killed worldwide since the beginning of 2025 while carrying out their duties, according to the latest figures released by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ). The IFJ reported that most of the fatalities occurred in conflict zones, with 50 journalists killed in Gaza, Palestine, eight in Ukraine and six in Sudan. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) noted that only one in ten cases involving the killing of journalists is ever investigated, underscoring a persistent climate of impunity and mounting threats to press freedom globally. IFJ President Dominique Bradley warned that the failure to hold perpetrators accountable sends a dangerous message that those in power can silence critical voices without consequence. Bradley reiterated the Federation's call for UN member states to endorse and implement the International Convention on the Safety and Independence of Journalists, aimed at enhancing protections for media professionals worldwide. //Petra// AK
