32/ UN Security Council, General Assembly adopt resolutions to strengthen peacebuilding architecture

New York, Nov. 26 (Petra) The UN Security Council on Wednesday adopted a resolution on reviewing the peacebuilding architecture, while the General Assembly approved an identical text.

The Security Council resolution, numbered 2805, and the General Assembly’s matching decision call for unprecedented institutional steps, including an annual program of work for the Peacebuilding Commission and the launch of a "Peacebuilding Week" next June.

The resolution tasks the Peacebuilding Commission with developing a detailed and predictable annual work program that more closely links its activities with those of the General Assembly, the Security Council and the Economic and Social Council, reaffirming that the Commission serves as a platform to assist Member States.

In 2005, the General Assembly and the Security Council adopted a parallel decision establishing the Peacebuilding Commission and the Peacebuilding Support Office and requesting the Secretary-General to create the Peacebuilding Fund.

According to the United Nations, the matching resolution enables the formulation of a shared framework to support peacebuilding efforts across the UN’s development, human rights, and peace and security pillars. The Council and the Assembly will conduct another comprehensive review of UN peacebuilding in 2030.
