22/ UNICEF: Gaza’s children face acute malnutrition as winter conditions worsen

Amman, Nov. 29 (Petra) – Children in Gaza continue to suffer from severe food shortages and widespread disease, with cold weather adding new life-threatening risks, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said on Saturday.

In a statement, UNICEF reported about 9,300 cases of acute malnutrition among children under five during October, warning that the humanitarian situation is deteriorating as winter sets in and food supplies run critically low.

The agency said soaring malnutrition levels are putting children’s lives at immediate risk, while cold temperatures are increasing the likelihood of illness and death among the most vulnerable. Nutrition screenings, it added, show a sharp rise in deficiencies amid a lack of basic goods and soaring prices of animal-based foods.

UNICEF stressed that large quantities of winter supplies remain stuck at Gaza’s borders and urged that they be allowed in without delay. It also called for all border crossings to be opened simultaneously to accelerate the flow of humanitarian aid.
