Amman, Nov. 30 (Petra) -- The Jordanian National Commission for Women (JNCW) organized a workshop titled "The Role of Civil Society, Human Rights Organizations, and National Institutions in Supporting the Implementation of National Priorities 2025–2030," as part of Jordan’s sixth periodic review report on progress toward implementing the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action 30 years (Beijing +30) after its adoption.

According to a JNCW statement issued Sunday, the workshop was held in cooperation with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), UN-Women, and with support from the Danish Centre for Information on Gender, Equality and Diversity (KVINFO).

The discussions focus on national priorities for the next five years, based on the "Beijing+30" report, and the role of civil society and national human rights institutions in implementing them.

The two-day workshop includes the Human Rights Coordinator at the Prime Ministry Muath Mumani, Independent Election Commission Board Member Abeer Dababneh, representatives of national civil-society and human-rights organizations, relevant government institutions, UN-Women Jordan, and KVINFO.

JNCW Secretary General Maha Ali said the workshop aims to coordinate efforts among government bodies, national human rights institutions, and civil society organizations to accelerate progress on national priorities identified in the comprehensive Beijing+30 review and ensure their integration into various sectoral strategies and plans.

She noted that these priorities were developed through a participatory process led by the JNCW in cooperation with the Ministerial Committee for Women’s Empowerment. Ali said the Commission seeks through these priorities to achieve further progress and address challenges in areas such as gender equality and eliminating violence against women and girls.

Ali added that the priorities also include enhancing women’s economic participation, including access to employment, rights in the workplace, closing the gender wage gap, fostering women’s entrepreneurship, strengthening social protection, adopting gender-responsive budgeting, and improving sex-disaggregated data, alongside establishing a women’s observatory to support evidence-based policymaking.

Deputy Chair of the Economic and Social Council Reem Badran highlighted the Council’s role in conducting studies, tracking progress, and engaging stakeholders through social dialogue to provide recommendations to the government and relevant institutions on strengthening women’s roles and achieving national goals.

She said the Council has proposed two key recommendations for adoption as national priorities: doubling women’s economic participation in the labor market to 28 percent by 2033 through supporting women-led enterprises, providing flexible work environments, enhancing vocational and technical training for women, and amending legislation governing women’s work; and increasing women’s representation in government committees, elected councils, public shareholding companies, and professional unions to no less than 30 percent.

UN-Women Representative in Jordan Nicolas Burniat said the national report highlights progress toward the Beijing+30 commitments and outlines clear priorities for accelerating action for women and girls in line with national objectives, foremost among them the Economic Modernization Vision.

He commended the JNCW’s initiative to convene civil-society and government partners immediately after the report’s release to begin early planning, ensuring a comprehensive participatory approach that enables effective and timely implementation of these priorities.

ESCWA Center for Women Director Nada Darwazeh said the significance of this process lies not only in reviewing achievements but in maintaining momentum to ensure the periodic Beijing review is not a standalone event every five years, but a continuous pathway beginning with priority-setting and ending in clear steps to realize national goals, ensuring efforts remain targeted and impactful for the advancement of women’s status in Jordan.

The Beijing+30 Action Agenda, spearheaded by UN Women, reiterates the vital role of gender equality in promoting development, peace, and security, three decades after the historic Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. Drawing on contributions from 159 Member States, the Agenda highlights six key priorities: the digital revolution, poverty eradication, ending violence, equitable decision-making, peace and security, and climate justice. These priorities are supported by two fundamental pillars, financial resources and gender data, while placing adolescent girls and young women at the center of its efforts.
