28/ Police arrest gang suspect of exploiting runaway domestic workers

Amman, November 30 (Petra) – The Residency and Borders Department, in cooperation with the Human Trafficking Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department, arrested a group of individuals suspect of illegally employing runaway domestic workers of foreign nationalities in Amman on a daily-wage basis.

The Public Security Directorate (PSD) said in a statement that the arrests followed an investigation into information indicating the workers were being exploited and employed in violation of the law.

All suspects had been apprehended, along with the workers who were being hired under illegal and exploitative conditions that constitute human trafficking, according to the statement.

The employment of runaway domestic workers is a labour violation and a criminal act that endangers workers' safety, exposes them to exploitation and breaches labour and residency regulations, the statement reads.

The case has been referred to the competent judicial authorities to complete the investigation and take appropriate legal action against those involved, according to the statement.
