18/ Hashemite University student wins award for smart splint innovation

Zarqa, Oct. 7 (Petra) – Ayat Khalil, a student in the Department of Occupational Therapy at the Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences at Hashemite University, won an award in the 2025 "Sabelat Al Hassan" competition for inventing a smart splint designed for use in occupational therapy.

The innovation integrates an advanced medical sensor into the splint, connected to an electronic application that monitors the duration of wear and sends regular alerts to the patient. It tracks therapeutic exercises, measures movement, and notifies both the patient and therapist of any performance errors or indicators inconsistent with the treatment plan.

The device aims to improve patient adherence to treatment, accelerate recovery, and enhance functional outcomes. It also allows therapists to monitor patients remotely, improving the efficiency of healthcare services.

In a statement to the Jordan News Agency (Petra), Khalil said the smart splint builds on traditional plastic splints used to stabilize joints or support the hand after injuries.

She added that the idea preserves the splint’s basic structure while adding a technological component that enhances patient engagement during rehabilitation, particularly for those with low treatment adherence or limited awareness of potential complications.

The "Sabelat Al Hassan" competition is one of Jordan’s leading youth initiatives, held annually as part of a camp for university students that combines skill development, innovation, and teamwork.
