21/ Jordan Participates in Global Conference on Countering Terrorism
Amman, Oct. 8 (Petra) -- A Senate delegation, headed by Senator Hussein Hawatmeh, took part in the Global Parliamentary Conference on Counter-Terrorism and the Prevention of Violent Extremism, held in Istanbul, Türkiye, on Oct. 7–8. The event, organized jointly by the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Member States and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), brought together parliamentary delegations from more than 20 countries. The conference aimed to strengthen international and regional cooperation through the development of unified legislative frameworks to combat terrorism and to reinforce the role of parliaments in addressing violent extremism. Delivering a speech on the opening day, Hawatmeh highlighted that technological advancements and global connectivity have accelerated the spread of terrorism, whether through acts of violence or through the dissemination of extremist, racist, and discriminatory ideologies. He underlined the need for a comprehensive global strategy that integrates both hard and soft power to effectively combat terrorism and extremism, alongside efforts to resolve ongoing conflicts that undermine global peace and stability. Hawatmeh stressed that Jordan, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II, upholds dialogue and cooperation as essential tools for ensuring international security and stability. He noted that Jordan has endured terrorist attacks that resulted in the loss of lives and property, reiterating that no country can confront terrorism alone and that global solidarity and support for affected and less-capable nations are vital. On the second day, Senator Nabas described the conference as "a golden opportunity" to examine the global dimensions of terrorism and its associated challenges. He underscored the importance of enhancing the role of legislative bodies in combating terrorism and extremist ideologies, viewing this as a key step toward promoting a culture of peace and strengthening security and stability. //Petra// AJ
