63/ Arab League warns of dire consequences as Israeli ground offensive in Gaza escalates

Cairo, Sept 17 (Petra) – Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit on Wednesday warned of serious repercussions from the expansion of Israel’s ground offensive in Gaza, stressing that the operation represents a new and highly dangerous phase in the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people in the territory.

In a statement, Aboul Gheit strongly condemned the criminal actions of Israeli occupation forces in Gaza, including indiscriminate bombardment, targeting of civilians, and forced displacement aimed at expelling Palestinians from their homeland through killing, starvation, and siege. He emphasized that such displacement is illegal under international law and violates all humanitarian norms.

Gamal Rushdi, Arab League Secretary-General spokesperson, noted that the military operation in Gaza reflects the occupation’s unchecked deterioration and constitutes a grave breach of international humanitarian law, as the vast majority of Gaza’s population consists of civilians, including women and children.

Aboul Gheit condemned the international community’s failure to curb Israeli aggression and end these barbaric practices, warning that the world will pay a heavy price for inaction.

The spokesperson also welcomed the findings of the UN Independent Commission of Inquiry on the Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, which concluded that Israel had committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. He said the report directly contributes to holding the Israeli government and state leadership accountable, clarifying the legal elements of the crime, and making all responsible parties subject to the International Criminal Court.

He noted that this development assigns full responsibility for the genocide to the highest levels of Israeli leadership and underlines the need to enforce accountability and punish perpetrators openly in Gaza.
