17/ Jordan, Syria thwart joint drug trafficking attempt at Jaber crossing

Amman, April 9 (Petra) -- Jordanian and Syrian anti-narcotics authorities on Thursday announced seizure of 5.5 million Captagon pills in a joint security operation at the Jaber border crossing.

According to a joint statement, weeks of intelligence sharing and coordination allowed the two countries' competent authorities to track a regional drug trafficking network, which planned to smuggle "large" quantities across the Jordanian border for transit to other countries.

The two authorities' investigators identified the smugglers’ methods, including a large refrigerated truck used differently from previous operations. The vehicle was monitored and intercepted at the border, and its driver was arrested.

Inspecting the truck, a specialized border team uncovered 943 kilograms of Captagon in dough-like comaprtments hidden in the vehicle’s roof. The seized substance is sufficient to produce 5.5 million pills once processed.

The authorities noted all investigative procedures were conducted under direct coordination, and investigations continue to apprehend all members of the criminal network.
