27/ Transport minister, Saudi counterpart discuss Regional Railway Project
Amman, April 19 (Petra) – Jordanian Minister of Transport, Dr. Nidal Qatamin, held a virtual meeting with the Saudi Minister of Transport and Logistics, Saleh bin Nasser al-Jasser. During the meeting, the two ministers discussed ways to enhance cooperation in the land, maritime, and air transport sectors, within the framework of existing agreements signed by the two brotherly countries. According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Transport on Sunday, the discussions focused on mechanisms for developing the regional railway project, considered a pivotal enterprise in strengthening economic integration and facilitating trade and supply chains among the target countries. This effort will contribute to connecting regional markets and improving the efficiency of the transport system. Talking at the meeting, Qatamin underscored the project's "strategic" importance, stressing the ministry's readiness to provide "full support" and follow up on the necessary requirements to ensure the enterprise's progress and achievement of its developmental and economic goals, which strengthen Jordan's position as a "regional logistics hub." For his part, the Saudi minister called for forging a joint committee comprised of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Syria to study the proposed routes and lines for the railway project, focusing on Jaber- Omari border axis as a key connection point. He also urged preparation of a comprehensive plan on technical, economic, and operational aspects, and submission of recommendations to the relevant authorities to take a final decision. He stated Saudi Arabia possesses a "sophisticated" railway network spanning approximately 5,500 km, extending to the Jordanian border, which enhances prospects for the project's "efficient" implementation in the future. Concluding talks, both sides agreed that the relevant technical committees would commence their work immediately and hold successive meetings to discuss the project's technical and operational aspects. The teams will also prepare the necessary studies and develop implementation plans to ensure the railway project is implemented, based on the approved technical standards. //Petra// AG
