Amman, April 19 (Petra) -- Finland President Alexander Stubb stated on Sunday that the international system is undergoing a radical transformation from the post-Cold War era, moving away from a unified model of liberal democracy and globalization toward a more complex and pluralistic reality.

In a lecture titled "Global Transformations and the Shifting Balance of Power" delivered at the University of Jordan during his official visit to the Kingdom, Stubb noted that the world is in a difficult transition period. This transition lies between a rules-based multilateral system and one defined by spheres of influence and transactional deals between major powers.

Stubb expressed his firm support for the institutional model, describing it as the most stable and equitable framework for managing international relations. He explained that understanding the modern world requires a deep capacity to link ideas within broader contexts, emphasizing that knowledge is a continuous process of critical analysis.

Reflecting on his personal and international experience, the Finnish president underscored the importance of remaining open to diverse perspectives, particularly from the Middle East. He argued that a multiplicity of viewpoints is essential for a comprehensive understanding of global issues.

Regarding Finland's trajectory, the President explained that his country’s historical security and political challenges led it to adopt an approach based on building multiple alliances specifically through the European Union and NATO while maintaining independent political decision-making. He asserted that smaller nations require balanced relationships with major powers rather than total reliance on a single alliance.

On the economic front, Stubb highlighted the enduring necessity of global trade and a rules-based system. He warned that economic isolationism and excessive restrictions lead to instability, whereas openness and integration bolster national resilience and strength.

Stubb also addressed security issues and geopolitical shifts, warning that a lack of commitment to international law creates power vacuums filled by conflict. He called for the reform and strengthening of international institutions to maintain global stability and prevent chaos.

The President concluded by emphasizing youth empowerment, describing students as active partners in shaping global discourse. He urged them to embrace critical thinking and engage in international affairs to keep pace with rapid global changes.

Nathir Obeidat, President of the University of Jordan, moderated the session and described the visit as a significant milestone in Jordan-Finland cooperation. He noted that universities serve as more than centers for knowledge transfer; they are platforms for the meeting of civilizations and the construction of peace.

Obeidat added that the President’s interaction with students conveys a powerful message regarding the role of the younger generation in building the future and the importance of supporting their ambitions through high-quality education.

The lecture concluded with an interactive discussion where students and faculty raised questions regarding the role of the United Nations, economic shifts, and regional cooperation. In his responses, President Stubb reiterated the urgent need to reform the international system and restore the role of global rules in preserving stability.
