Amman, April 20 (Petra) – The Land Transport Regulatory Commission (LTRC) announced significant milestones in the inter-province public transport development project, a strategic initiative designed to restructure regular transport services and enhance operational efficiency across the Kingdom.

This progress is part of the commission’s 2024 – 2026 strategy and aligns with the broader national Economic Modernization Vision to improve service quality for citizens.

Data from the first phase executed in 2025 shows a high operational performance rate exceeding 95 percent across four primary routes. The fleet expanded from an initial 121 buses to 152, serving approximately 1.6 million passengers through over 139,000 trips.

Notably, the operational support required was significantly lower than projected, totaling 868,000 dinars against an allocated 2.038 million dinars, indicating high resource management efficiency.

Among the active routes, the Salt – Amman line recorded the highest volume with 832,000 passengers, followed by Irbid – Amman with 370,000, Jerash – Amman with 276,000, and Karak – Amman with 134,000. These figures underscore a balanced distribution of trips and support intended to ensure the long-term sustainability of the service.

The second phase, scheduled for 2026, involves the launch of seven new routes utilizing 180 buses with a daily capacity of 13,500 passengers. With an estimated annual operational cost of 5.76 million dinars, these routes will connect Amman with Ajloun, Ma’an, and Tafileh, while also linking Zarqa to Irbid and Mafraq, and connecting Jerash with both Irbid and Mafraq. This expansion aims to bolster the national transport network’s reliability and provide safe, regular options for commuters.

Regarding the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, the commission reported steady performance on two key lines. The Madaba – Prince Hamzah Hospital line currently serves 1,900 passengers daily, while the Sweileh – Balqa Applied University line serves approximately 4,500 passengers. The timeline for the phase two expansion includes procurement and installation starting in June, with pilot operations and a gradual rollout expected to reach full capacity by the end of July 2026.
