36/ Irbid municipality unveils plans for central vegetable market redevelopment

Irbid, April 21 (Petra) -- The Greater Irbid Municipality showcased on Tuesday final architectural plans for a new central vegetable and fruit market, aimed at revitalizing the downtown district and resolving a long-standing displacement of local traders.

The project was reviewed during a site visit by Khalil Haj Tawfiq, head of the Jordan and Amman Chambers of Commerce, alongside Irbid Chamber of Commerce President Mohammad Al Shuha and municipal officials.

Emad Al-Azzam, head of the municipal committee, confirmed that the project will be funded entirely through the municipality’s budget without resorting to external loans. The new design is expected to be more cost-effective than previous proposals while remaining tailored to the practical needs of the city's merchants.

The redevelopment includes the construction of 61 commercial units, ensuring that all former tenants can return to the market at affordable rental rates. Al-Azzam emphasized that the municipality views the project as a vital public service rather than a commercial investment opportunity.

The market project is part of a broader master plan to renovate downtown Irbid and the historic Tell Irbid area. The construction will coincide with the architectural restoration of surrounding storefronts to improve the city's urban aesthetic. According to the plans, the new facility will feature modern amenities, including parking spaces, public restrooms, and full accessibility for people with disabilities, utilizing natural lighting and ventilation.

Haj Tawfiq praised the municipality's commitment to ending the years-long stalemate following the demolition of the old market building. He noted that the use of pre-fabricated construction methods would significantly reduce costs and project timelines, allowing traders to resume operations quickly.

The visit concluded with a field tour of the current market site and the historic Tell Irbid area, where officials met with wholesalers and local merchants to discuss the impact of the upcoming development on the city’s commercial activity.
