6/ Jordan Moves to Integrate Energy Storage into Renewable Power Framework

Amman, April 21 (Petra) -- Jordan is preparing to embed energy storage systems into its renewable energy framework, as policymakers push to enhance grid stability and unlock the next phase of clean energy expansion.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Al-Kharabsheh said the integration of storage technologies is becoming central to managing the Kingdom’s growing renewable capacity, particularly in addressing peak demand pressures and improving overall system efficiency.

Speaking during a meeting of the Energy Sector Partnership Council, Al-Kharabsheh said proposed amendments to the 2024 regulation governing the connection of renewable energy facilities will introduce storage systems under defined technical conditions, creating a more flexible and investment-friendly framework.

"Storage solutions are no longer optional but essential to balancing supply and demand," he said, noting their role in reducing strain on the electricity network and lowering costs over time.

The proposed changes are designed to align the interests of consumers, distribution companies, and system operators, while advancing the targets of Jordan’s Economic Modernization Vision, particularly in expanding renewable energy deployment.

Discussions during the meeting focused on technical and regulatory considerations, including connection requirements for storage systems, capacity calculations, network usage charges, and mechanisms governing electricity exports.

Participants stressed that the shift toward storage-backed renewable systems will require sustained coordination between public and private stakeholders to ensure regulatory clarity and system reliability.

Jordan has accelerated its adoption of renewable energy over the past decade, and officials say the addition of storage technologies will mark a structural shift in how the power system is managed, from generation-focused expansion to integrated, flexible energy systems.

The meeting brought together representatives from regulatory bodies, distribution companies, industry associations, and research institutions, reflecting a broader effort to align policy, infrastructure, and investment in the energy sector.
