11/ Jordan, Germany discuss developing water negotiation skills
Amman, April 27 (Petra) -- Ministry of Water and Irrigation Secretary-General, Jihad Mahameed, discussed on Monday with German officials ways to enhance German support for developing the skills of Jordan’s national team involved in shared water negotiations. The meeting at the Jordan University of Science and Technology brought together water ministry officials, Development Counsellor at the German Embassy in Amman, Marius Rauh, and water and energy portfolio coordinator at the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), Trevor Surridge, according to a ministry statement. Mahameed said the permanent national committee for transboundary water negotiations, launched in February, comprises experts from all relevant ministries, forming an integrated team covering legal, social, agricultural and technical aspects to ensure Jordan’s readiness in future water talks. He added that the long-term goal is to establish a central water negotiations unit within the ministry as the main reference for managing this strategic file. The project, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and supported by GIZ, focuses on enhancing negotiation skills and strengthening water diplomacy, while Jordan University of Science and Technology provides logistical and training support through its specialized facilities. Mahameed and the German delegation attended part of a training session to review the team’s progress and listened to participants’ feedback and recommendations to maximize the program’s impact. //Petra// NQ
