17/ Higher Education Ministry: 550 scholarships, student loans for each district starting next year
Amman, April 27 (Petra) – The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research said on Monday a new scholarship and student partial loan mechanism at public universities strikes a balance between quotas for each district and population density. The Cabinet has approved an amendment to the Student Support Fund regulations at public universities, to enhance fairness and equal opportunities in the distribution of financial aid to students. It was decided that 550 partial scholarships and loans will be allocated as a fixed quota for each district of the Kingdom, distributed as follows: 250 loans and 150 scholarships for undergraduate students, and 150 scholarships for associate degree students in vocational and applied fields, said Higher Education Ministry spokesman Muhannad Al-Khatib. This fixed allocation represents 50 percent of the total aid, while the other 50 percent is distributed based on the relative importance of each district, determined annually by the number of eligible applicants, he told Petra in an interview. Al-Khatib said chances for students in districts with high student density will see a significant increase due to their increased share of grants and loans, he said, adding that the new system will go into force starting in the 2026-2027 academic year. //Petra//SS
