4/ Jordan, Syria Explore Joint Business Council to Bolster Strategic Economic Integration

Damascus, April 28 (Petra) -- Senator Khalil Haj Tawfiq, Chairman of the Jordan Chamber of Commerce, held high-level discussions in Damascus on Tuesday with Alaa Al-Ali, President of the Federation of Syrian Chambers of Commerce, focusing on accelerating bilateral trade and removing logistical hurdles.

During the meeting, both parties emphasized the urgent need to finalize the formation of the Joint Business Council. They agreed on a swift selection process for members to establish specialized committees tasked with managing economic portfolios and transforming existing Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) into tangible investment projects.

Haj Tawfiq underscored that the Jordanian private sector views its relationship with Syria through the lens of strategic integration and long-term investment partnerships, rather than mere commodity exchange.

He urged the Syrian side to leverage Jordan's extensive network of international free trade agreements and the Kingdom’s robust transit infrastructure for re-exporting goods to global markets.

From the Syrian perspective, Al-Ali and Issam Al-Ghriwati, President of the Damascus Chamber of Commerce, called for a "new era" of economic cooperation.

They stressed the importance of involving the private sector in the technical committees of the Higher Coordination Council to ensure that official diplomatic progress translates into practical benefits for the commercial, service, and agricultural sectors.

The meetings, attended by regional trade leaders from Daraa and Damascus, also highlighted the twinning agreement between the Amman and Damascus Chambers of Commerce as a primary vehicle for fostering secure and efficient cross-border trade flows.
