49/ Spanish journalist Carles Gené reflects on four decades of documentary filmmaking in Amman

Amman, April 28 (Petra) -- Renowned Spanish audiovisual journalist and filmmaker Carles Gené shared his extensive experience producing documentaries in conflict zones, disaster areas, and natural landscapes during a lecture at the Instituto Cervantes in Amman on Tuesday.

In his presentation, titled "On the Front Lines," Gené recounted the evolution of journalism and filmmaking over his 40-year career, which began in 1982. He vividly described his early days in 1985 working for Catalonia's TV3, when he was dispatched to cover military conflicts. Gené highlighted the physical toll of the era’s technology, noting that cameras then weighed approximately 7 kilograms, making rapid movement in war zones a significant challenge compared to today’s compact digital tools.

Introduced by the institute’s director Yolanda Soler, Gené said journalistic tools were far less advanced then, noting that television cameras weighed around 7 kilograms, making them difficult to carry under conditions that required constant movement, compared with today’s lighter equipment and the advances brought by digital technology.

He also reviewed his experience in sports journalism after 1988 and his work on documentaries focusing on natural sites and tourism promotion, noting that over a career spanning more than 40 years since 1982, he has covered and filmed events in several countries.

Soler said at the start of the lecture that Gené had worked extensively in television journalism, produced numerous documentaries, and embraced challenges, adding that he founded the "Piranda" television station and led many successful media and journalism projects across Spain and Europe.

She added that Gené plans to hold a photo exhibition in Amman in November on nature reserves and rock inscriptions in Wadi Rum. One of his documentary films was screened during the event.
