21/ Parliamentary committee urges Arab cooperation on renewable energy, energy security
Amman, April 29 (Petra) – The Parliamentary Energy and Mineral Resources Committee joined a preparatory meeting for the Sixth Arab Dialogue Workshop on Renewable Energy at the Centre for Strategic Studies at the University of Jordan, with the participation of energy experts and specialists. According to a committee statement issued Wednesday, committee chair MP Ayman Abu Hanieh discussed the workshop's role in enhancing Arab cooperation and exchanging expertise in renewable energy. Abu Hanieh said that achieving Arab energy security is essential for supporting economic stability and sustainable development in the region. He said that Jordan has made significant progress in strengthening its legislative framework for the energy sector, particularly in renewable energy and green hydrogen, as well as in regulating the electricity and gas sectors. The efforts, he added, help improve the investment climate and increase reliance on local and renewable energy sources. Abu Hanieh called for coordination between the legislative and executive branches, in collaboration with research institutions, to develop practical recommendations. The recommendations, he added, should aim to optimise the use of clean energy and harness national resources such as silicon and copper, while supporting local manufacturing in energy-related industries. MPs Jamal Qamouh, Rakin Abu Hanieh and Nour Abu Ghosh called for investing in Arab countries' available resources and strengthening integration in energy projects, which they said would help reduce costs and enhance energy security. Centre Director Hassan Momani reviewed the role of energy in regional development, stressing the importance of addressing challenges and opportunities in the sector through shared regional visions that support the future of renewable energy in the Arab world. Participants presented recommendations and interventions on the workshop themes, describing it as an important platform for discussing the future of renewable energy projects, enhancing regional competitiveness and supporting investment in both energy and the green economy. //Petra// AK
