14/ Jordanian, Scottish universities launch joint pharmaceutical sciences PhD

Zarqa, Feb. 2 (Petra) -- Zarqa University announced on Monday the launch of its first joint doctoral program in pharmaceutical sciences in partnership with the University of Aberdeen in the United Kingdom, marking the first program of its kind in Jordan.

The four-year PhD program is designed in line with internationally accredited academic standards and is jointly supervised by specialized academic staff and researchers from both universities. It aims to expand opportunities for Jordanian and Arab researchers in advanced scientific research and pharmaceutical development.

Under the joint study model, students will complete their first year at Zarqa University, focusing on coursework, research proposal development, and academic preparation for study in the United Kingdom. This will be followed by two years at the University of Aberdeen, where students will conduct advanced research and benefit from state-of-the-art laboratories and research facilities. In the final year, students will return to Zarqa University to complete and defend their doctoral dissertations.

University President Nidal Ramahi said the program reflects the university’s commitment to enabling researchers to engage in advanced international research experiences, enhancing scientific output and strengthening links between academic research and the needs of the health and industrial sectors.

He said the program represents a qualitative advancement in postgraduate pharmaceutical studies at both the national and regional levels, supported by advanced research infrastructure, qualified academic staff, and comprehensive institutional backing that contributes to high-quality research outcomes and the preparation of globally competitive researchers.

Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Zarqa University Ahlam Kilani said the joint program is distinguished by its advanced scientific content and diverse research tracks, covering modern pharmaceutical and chemical disciplines aligned with contemporary research requirements.

She said the program provides students with opportunities to work within international research teams and benefit from the University of Aberdeen’s expertise through joint supervision, ensuring strong academic rigor and scientific depth. She added that the faculty places emphasis on early academic and research development by guiding students toward applied research topics that serve the community and support the pharmaceutical industry.

The program offers a competitive financial support package, including preferential tuition fees at Zarqa University, a 10 percent reduction in annual fees at the University of Aberdeen, and an annual scholarship of £5,000 during the second and third years to cover bench fees, easing financial burdens and supporting research activities.
