23/ Parliamentary Committee, FAO Talk Agricultural Cooperation

Amman, Feb. 9 (Petra) -- The Lower House's Agriculture and Water Committee, on Monday discussed with Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) Representative in Jordan Nabil Assaf ways to enhance cooperation and boost the UN organization’s role in supporting and sustaining Jordan’s agricultural sector.

The Committee's head, MP Ahmad Shdeifat, stressed the importance of FAO programs and projects in Jordan aimed at developing agriculture, improving food security, supporting small-scale farmers, promoting sustainable management of natural resources and water, and addressing climate change challenges.

He underlined the importance of partnerships with international organizations, particularly FAO, in backing national efforts to advance the agricultural sector, noting the committee’s role in monitoring policies and legislation that support sustainable agricultural development in line with national priorities and the Kingdom’s agricultural strategy.

MPs highlighted FAO’s contributions to food security, farmer empowerment, and the development of sustainable agricultural practices.

They said FAO serves as a key driver for the sector through support of productive projects, capacity building, and technical expertise, in line with Royal directives and the state’s vision for comprehensive agricultural development.

For his part, Assaf noted the Royal directives for enhanced food security, describing these as a clear roadmap for advancing the agricultural sector and achieving food sustainability.

He said they reflect a long-term strategic vision for addressing regional and global challenges, particularly climate change and water scarcity.

Assaf asserted FAO’s commitment to supporting Jordan’s national efforts through programs and projects focused on boosting agricultural production, supporting small farmers, and improving food value chains, contributing to a more resilient food system capable of meeting future challenges and ensuring food security in Jordan.
