24/ House Environment Committee, Westminster Foundation Discuss Cooperation

Amman, Feb. 10 (Petra) -- The Lower House Environment and Climate Committee, chaired by MP Jihad Abawi, met on Tuesday with representatives of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) to explore cooperation on environmental protection and climate change, including support to strengthen environmental legislation and parliamentary oversight.

According to a committee statement, Abawi underscored the importance of expanding international partnerships to modernize environmental laws, bolster national efforts to address climate impacts, and reinforce the Lower House's supervisory role on environmental files in support of sustainable development.

MPs Omar Bani Khaled, Adnan Mashoka, Zuhair Khashman, Hayel Ayash, and Hussein Krishan stressed the need to further develop the environmental legislative framework and broaden international cooperation and knowledge exchange to enhance Jordan’s capacity to respond to climate challenges.

WFD Jordan Country Representative, Rana Kawar, said the foundation’s support includes specialized training programs and stronger engagement with civil society organizations, aimed at improving public policy design and raising parliamentary performance on environmental portfolios.

Omar Shoshan, Chairman of the Union of Environmental Associations, emphasized the need to translate international commitments into sustainable climate projects on the ground and ensure their continuity to deliver measurable environmental and social impact.
