Amman, Feb. 11 (Petra) -- The Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission (CARC) and Syria’s General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport (GACA) on Wednesday initialed an updated air services agreement to regulate air traffic between the two countries.

The agreement, signed during talks in Amman, replaces a previous accord signed in Damascus in 1976.

The new deal aligns with global developments in the aviation sector by adopting an open skies policy to enhance competitiveness, expand options for travelers and allow more air carriers to operate between the two countries.

The agreement was signed by CARC Board Chairman Dhaifallah AlFarajat and the President of GACA Omar Hosari.

It includes a new legal provision regulating code-sharing arrangements to expand air connectivity networks between the two sides.

The discussions also covered updating a technical agreement defining responsibilities between the area control centers in Amman and Damascus to ensure compliance with international safety standards and facilitate smooth air traffic movement in line with the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation.

AlFarajat said the cooperation reflects the deep historic ties between the two countries, underling the aviation sector as a key driver of economic and trade growth.

He said the new facilitation measures would positively impact passenger and air cargo services by offering competitive fares and advanced services.
