54/ Arab League Calls on U.S. to Honor Commitments on West Bank, Condemns Israeli Aggression
Cairo, Feb 11 (Petra) - The Arab League Council at the level of permanent representatives, during an extraordinary session held Wednesday at the headquarters of the Arab League Secretariat at the request of the State of Palestine, called on the President of the United States, in the context of his efforts to achieve peace, to fulfill his commitments made to Arab and Islamic countries to prevent the annexation of the occupied West Bank, contributing to peace, stability, and security in the region. The council also urged Argentina not to move its embassy to Jerusalem, warning that such a step would cause serious harm to Arab-Argentine relations at all levels, constitute a grave violation of international law and relevant United Nations resolutions on Jerusalem, and infringe upon the rights of the Palestinian people. The council strongly condemned the aggressive decisions recently taken by the Israeli occupation government aimed at advancing plans and policies to annex occupied West Bank territories, including East Jerusalem, expanding colonial settlements, carrying out forced displacement, demolishing homes, seizing private and public lands, and transferring the powers of Hebron Municipality to the so-called "Civil Administration" of the occupation government, consolidating occupation and apartheid in Hebron and undermining the status of the Ibrahimi Mosque. The Arab League Council affirmed steadfast Arab support for the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them the right to self-determination and the right of return, as well as the right of the State of Palestine and the Palestinian people to full sovereignty over the territory of the State of Palestine within the pre-June 4, 1967 borders, including its holy sites, natural resources, waters, airspace, and its capital, East Jerusalem. The council expressed its categorical rejection of any fragmentation of Palestinian land or attempts to separate the Gaza Strip from the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, stressing that the political and geographic unity of the State of Palestine within the 1967 borders is an Arab constant. It supported the State of Palestine in assuming full responsibilities over all its territories with Arab and international backing, based on adherence to the Palestine Liberation Organization as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people, its political program, international commitments, and the principles of one system, one law, and legitimate armed resistance, rejecting the sidelining of the organization in determining the present and future of the Palestinian people. The council strongly condemned the ongoing terrorist crimes committed by settlers against unarmed Palestinian civilians, their property, and places of worship under the protection of the Israeli occupation government and army, calling on the international community to provide international protection for the Palestinian people against these racist crimes. It also condemned Israeli occupation decisions, legislation, and practices against the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), including the demolition and closure of its offices and schools and attempts to liquidate it in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem. The council called for the provision of the necessary political, legal, and financial support for the agency and its activities on a permanent and sustainable basis, enabling it to continue carrying out its mandate and role in its five areas of operation toward Palestinian refugees. The council stressed that any Israeli government action to implement decisions and plans to annex any part of the occupied Palestinian territory of 1967 constitutes a war crime and a grave violation of international law and relevant international legitimacy resolutions. Such actions form part of ongoing acts of aggression, genocide, and ethnic cleansing committed by Israel, the occupying power, against the Palestinian people, emphasizing that all practices, decisions, and measures aimed at seizing occupied Palestinian land and changing its legal status and demographic composition are null and void and bear no legal effect. The Arab League Council called on Arab groups in international organizations, Arab ambassador councils, and Arab League missions worldwide to act urgently at all levels to convey the contents of this decision to capitals and international organizations. The council also called on the Secretary-General of the Arab League to follow up on the implementation of this decision and report on it to the next session of the Arab League Council. //Petra// AF
