6/ Yarmouk University, UNHCR Move to Deepen Support for Refugee Students
Irbid, Feb. 11 (Petra) -- Yarmouk University President Malek Alsharairi met with UNHCR Representative to Jordan Maria Stavropoulou to explore avenues for strengthening collaboration aimed at better supporting refugee students. According to a university statement issued on Wednesday, Alsharairi underscored Yarmouk’s commitment to Jordan’s broader efforts on refugee issues, noting that the institution has expanded its international partnerships and mobilized its academic and research capabilities to advance humanitarian and development initiatives. Through its Center for Refugee, Displaced Persons and Forced Migration Studies, the university has introduced a range of measures to widen access to higher education for refugees. Around 500 refugee students are currently enrolled across various academic programs. The university also conducts specialized research, offers training workshops, and provides psychosocial support services tailored to refugee students’ needs. Alsharairi emphasized the value of closer cooperation with UNHCR in areas such as research, capacity building, and joint training programs, as well as collaborative projects that address the needs of both refugees and host communities, while reinforcing the educational process and community engagement. Stavropoulou praised Yarmouk University’s academic standing and its contribution to community development. She expressed UNHCR’s interest in expanding cooperation to ensure lasting, positive outcomes for refugee students and commended the university’s research efforts and partnerships aimed at advancing practical solutions to displacement challenges. //Petra// WH
