39/ Sahel Horan Municipality Head, EU Envoy Talk Development Cooperation

Irbid, Feb 15 (Petra) - Chairman of the Sahel Horan Municipality Committee Walid Al-Quran discussed on Sunday with European Union Ambassador to Jordan Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas ways to enhance cooperation and partnership in service, development, and investment fields.

Al-Quran reviewed key needs of the municipality’s areas in terms of basic and development projects, pointing to the impact of the Syrian refugee influx on infrastructure and services and the importance of supporting municipal efforts and improving the level of services provided to citizens.

For his part, the European Union ambassador affirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting local development efforts and strengthening basic services in northern Jordan. He referred to the implementation of the wastewater project in Ramtha and the Sahel Horan, which includes the areas of Al-Turra, Al-Shajara, Amrawa, and Thneibeh, serving Ramtha and neighboring areas, with funding of approximately 98.6 million euros supported by the European Union and the French Development Agency.

He noted that the project aims to establish and expand approximately 170 kilometers of wastewater networks and build a new treatment plant to serve about 180,000 people by 2030, thereby improving public health, protecting groundwater, and upgrading living conditions for residents.

The ambassador also highlighted the importance of the rehabilitation and development project for the Al-Akaider landfill, fully funded by the European Union, which serves the Sahel Horan and northern governorates, given its role in improving solid waste management, reducing environmental risks, and meeting international environmental standards.

He underscored the importance of strengthening education and vocational training in the area to enhance its economic capabilities and prepare it to become a regional hub supporting reconstruction efforts in Syria, while providing sustainable job opportunities and reinforcing the resilience of local communities.

During the meeting, a presentation was delivered on projects that could be implemented in cooperation with the European Union, in addition to reviewing local development priorities, investment opportunities, and ways to improve vital sectors in the Sahel Horan Municipality.
