15/ Degree-seeking foreign students rise to 55,410 in Jordan-Data
Amman, Jan. 13 (Petra) – Official statistics released by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research for the 2025/2026 academic year on Tuesday revealed a "continued" increase in the number of international students enrolled in Jordan's higher education institutions (HEIs). According to the ministry's data, a total of 55,410 international students are currently studying in these institutions from 119 countries worldwide, which reinforces Jordan's position as a "regional and global educational destination." The data showed a "steady" rise in the number of foreign students over the past six years, rising from 36,789 in 2020 to 55,410 last year. The statistics indicated that these students constitute 11.5% of the total number of degree seekers in Jordanian higher education institutions. The figures noted the number of newly admitted non-Jordanian students has doubled over the past five years, as approximately 12,973 new degree seekers were admitted last year, compared to 6,307 in 2020. Private universities and colleges accounted for the largest share of foreign students at 65% (36,239 students), compared to 35% (19,171 students) in public universities and colleges. Regarding the distribution by academic level, the vast majority of students were enrolled in bachelor's programs at 87.1%, totaling 48,235 students. This figure was followed by postgraduate studies at 9.4% with 5,187 students and then intermediate degrees at 3.5% with 1,988 students. As for nationalities, Palestinian students topped the list in Jordanian higher education institutions, followed by Saudi, Syrian, and Egyptian peers. The data indicated that the list also featured "significant" numbers from Iraq, the 1948 Arab territories, Kuwait, Malaysia, Oman, Indonesia, the Philippines, Yemen, China, and Bahrain. //Petra// AG
