  36/ Municipalities across Jordan take field measures to cope with weather depressions

Governorates, Jan. 18 (Petra) - A number of municipalities on Sunday implemented field and preventive measures to deal with weather depressions, including opening culverts, cleaning water drainage channels, and activating emergency rooms, with the aim of ensuring public safety, protecting property, and maintaining service continuity.

In Ajloun, Al-Junaid Municipality addressed the problem of rainwater accumulation in the Abaleen area by constructing a number of water culverts in the area, with the aim of addressing the rise in water levels on the road leading to Princess Haya Military Hospital.

The municipality said it handled soil collapses in accordance with technical specifications in order to reduce the risks of water accumulation and protect public and private property and ensure citizens’ safety, noting that municipal crews inspected a newly constructed water culvert in the Abaleen area and ensured smooth water flow and its capacity to absorb falling rainwater in line with approved technical procedures.

Head of the municipal committee Ahmad Qoqazeh instructed emergency rooms across the various areas of Al-Junaid to follow up on all complaints and suggestions related to rainwater accumulation during the depression in preparation for studying areas that witness water ponds and putting in place lasting solutions.

In Mafraq, head of the municipal committee Mohammad Al-Fayez affirmed the municipality’s readiness to deal with weather depressions with full efficiency, noting that the municipality’s emergency room is operating at full readiness around the clock, alongside monitoring citizens’ observations and complaints and addressing them immediately upon receipt.

He said the municipality had put in place a prior action plan for the emergency room, which included cleaning box culverts and rainwater drainage channels before the start of winter, in addition to field follow-up after each weather depression to ensure smooth water flow and prevent any obstructions.

In Karak, municipal emergency and operations room crews installed culverts, opened roads, and rehabilitated blocked culverts in various areas ÇáÊÇÈÚÉ to the municipality.

Head of the municipal committee Mohammad Al-Manasir said the implementation of these service works comes within ongoing follow-up to ensure public safety and service continuity in light of prevailing weather conditions.

Meanwhile, crews of the emergency room at Greater Jerash Municipality continued cleaning works for culverts and manholes and inspecting hot spots.

Municipal crews carried out cleaning works on a culvert in the Al-Berkatain area, removing all obstacles from the culvert to ensure smoother water drainage, in addition to removing branches near roads to ensure clear visibility, citizens’ safety, and ease of movement on roads.

The municipality said all its crews in the field are ready to deal with any emergency, calling on citizens to report any observations.

Separately, Russeifa Municipality began installing a number of cameras designated to record environmental violations within the city limits in accordance with the new cleanliness and environment law, which imposes financial fines on anyone who commits violations by dumping waste outside designated areas.

Head of the municipal committee Husam Najdawi said the municipality has begun installing 15 cameras for this purpose, the number allocated to the municipality at this stage, with installation carried out on a number of garbage trucks and inspection and monitoring crews to enable the immediate recording of environmental violations in order to curb random dumping of waste, especially from vehicles and homes, on roads and in tourist areas.

He noted that environmental violations range from JD20 up to JD500 depending on the seriousness and scale of the violation, calling on citizens to adhere to the teachings of the true Islamic religion in this regard, to authentic Arab values, and to preserve a clean and beautiful environment.
