5/ Advanced Eye Surgery Restores Hope for Patient at King Abdullah University Hospital

Ramtha, Jan. 26 (Petra) -- A specialized medical team at King Abdullah University Hospital has successfully performed a complex, multi-stage eye surgery on a patient who had suffered a severe rupture of the eyeball, underscoring the hospital’s capacity to handle highly challenging ophthalmic cases.

The three-hour procedure was carried out by Consultant Ophthalmologist and Cornea and Glaucoma Specialist Dr. Asim Al-Qudah, in cooperation with Consultant Ophthalmologist and Retina Specialist Dr. Rami Al-Dweiri.

Dr. Al-Qudah said the patient had sustained a serious penetrating injury to the right eye months earlier, resulting in extensive structural damage. Upon assessment at the hospital’s ophthalmology clinics, examinations revealed severe corneal opacity, loss of the natural lens and part of the iris, in addition to vitreous hemorrhage and partial retinal detachment.

He explained that the surgical intervention involved removing the damaged cornea, implanting a specially designed intraocular lens in the posterior chamber, and temporarily fitting an artificial cornea to allow for precise internal eye surgery.

Dr. Al-Dweiri said the team then performed a vitrectomy and stabilized the detached retina, before concluding the procedure by replacing the temporary cornea with a natural human cornea sourced from the eye bank.

Director General of the hospital Dr. Hassan Al-Balas said the operation reflects the hospital’s commitment to advanced subspecialty care and its ability to manage complex medical conditions through skilled teams and modern technology. He noted that the hospital continues to expand its role as a leading referral center for advanced medical and surgical care.

King Abdullah University Hospital serves more than two million residents in northern Jordan and receives patients from across the Kingdom and neighboring countries, positioning it as a key pillar of the national healthcare system.
