Tunis, Jan. 28 (Petra)- Jordan took part in a regional workshop that opened on Wednesday in Tunis under the title "Better Data for Adult Learning and Education to Improve Governance and Policies in the Arab Region," organized by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning and the Institute for International Cooperation of the German Adult Education Association.

Ahmad Khawaldeh, a member of the Non-Formal Education Department at the Directorate of General Education, said that Jordan is among the leading countries in the region in focusing on combating illiteracy and promoting adult education.

He explained that the Kingdom’s adult education and literacy program gives importance to various aspects of the issue, including logistics, equipment, and trained teaching staff, and has contributed significantly to reducing the illiteracy rate to less than 5 percent, according to the latest statistics.

He added that the program is open not only to Jordanian citizens but to all nationalities residing in the Kingdom and concludes after four years, with beneficiaries obtaining a certificate certified by the Ministry of Education, enabling them to continue learning through the home study program. He noted that the program extends through 176 centers distributed across various regions of the Kingdom.

The workshop aims to identify ongoing challenges and available opportunities to improve the governance of adult learning and education and the quality of data in the Arab region and to develop a unified Arab vision on the main challenges and opportunities related to the governance of adult learning and education.

The workshop is attended by government officials, international bodies, and civil society organizations from 12 Arab countries, in addition to Jordan: Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Mauritania, Morocco, Palestine, Sudan, Syria, Yemen, and Tunisia.
