45/ Shoman Foundation to launch Arab Film Nights on Tuesday

Amman, July 13 (Petra) -- The Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation will launch its "Arab Film Nights" screening series on Tuesday evening in Amman.

The event, organized by the foundation's cinema committee, will run through Thursday, according to a statement released on Monday.

The screenings begin on Tuesday evening with the acclaimed Sudanese drama "Goodbye Julia," the debut feature film by director Mohamed Kordofani. The film represented Sudan in the Best International Feature Film category at the Academy Awards, secured more than 37 international accolades, and made history as the first Sudanese film selected for the Cannes Film Festival's Un Certain Regard section, where it won the Freedom Prize.

On Wednesday, the festival will screen "The Village Next to Paradise," a Somali feature film that emerged as a major critical success at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Directed by Mo Harawe, the debut film offers a dramatic look at life in Somalia amid ongoing conflict and civil unrest.

Mogadishu-born Harawe migrated to Austria at the age of 18 and studied cinema in Germany. He previously directed several short films set in Somalia, including "Life on the Horn" (2020), which premiered at Switzerland's Locarno Film Festival, and "Will My Parents Come to See Me" (2022), which debuted at the Berlin International Film Festival.

The showcase concludes on Thursday with "The Dream of Shahrazad," a prominent documentary by South African filmmaker Francois Verster, whose creative vision is informed by his background in the anti-apartheid movement.
