7/ Cybercrime Unit Apprehends Mastermind Behind Fraudulent Online Mobile Installment Scams
Amman, July 13, (Petra) – The Cybercrime Unit has received dozens of complaints from citizens who fell victim to online fraud after interacting with deceptive social media pages promoting mobile phones on installment plans at highly attractive prices, according to the Public Security Directorate's media spokesperson.
The spokesperson explained that investigations into the complaints revealed that anonymous online fraudsters had created multiple fake pages to advertise these installment offers. Once a victim initiated contact to buy a phone, the scammers instructed them to transfer an upfront payment to a digital wallet. Upon receiving the funds, the perpetrators immediately cut off communication and ignored all subsequent calls and messages.
Technical investigations and the tracking of digital financial transfers successfully identified the primary suspect behind the fraud operations, who has since been arrested and taken in for interrogation.
The Cybercrime Unit urged the public to avoid interacting with unverified pages or those impersonating legitimate mobile retail shops. Authorities cautioned citizens against making any financial transfers before physically receiving goods and advised using secure, certified transaction methods to avoid falling prey to cyber fraud.
