44/ Jordan, Japan inspect upgrades at Zai Water Treatment Plant

Amman, July 14 (Petra) - Sufyan Bataineh, Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ) Secretary-General, Asari Hideki, Japanese Ambassador to Jordan, and Mohammad Kharabsheh, Miyahuna CEO, inspected operational upgrades at the Zai Water Treatment Plant on Tuesday.

The delegation toured the Deir Alla intake station and the King Abdullah Canal, which feeds raw water to the Zai plant. Officials were introduced to the treatment process at Zai, a critical facility providing drinking water to Amman and several governorates.

Funded by a grant from the Japanese government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the project went operational in mid-2023, replacing and modernizing key operational equipment and systems to improve efficiency, reliability, and overall water supply performance.

Bataineh said the project is a successful example of Jordanian-Japanese cooperation, adding that it boosted the plant's infrastructure, improved operational efficiency, and supported the long-term sustainability of water services.

WAJ will continue upgrading water infrastructure through partnerships with international donors to help address the Kingdom's water challenges and improve the sector's efficiency and sustainability, according to Bataineh.

Hideki, for his part, praised the water partnership between Tokyo and Amman, stating Japan's commitment to funding projects that strengthen Jordan's water security, improve services, and build local capacity.
