49/ Madaba starts project to recycle bread waste into animal feed
Madaba, July 14 (Petra) - The Jordanian National Commission for Women (JNFW) in Madaba launched the "My Sandwich Leftovers" initiative on Tuesday, a project aimed at collecting remaining bread from schools, universities, restaurants, and hotels to process into chemical-free animal feed. The initiative will process and sell collected bread to local poultry and livestock farmers, supporting a circular economy while reducing organic waste. Aljazieh Maayeh, JNFW's rapporteur in Madaba, noted that the initiative promotes practical sustainability, cuts food waste, and creates local jobs. She added that expansion plans are already set for the nearby towns. MP Samer Azayda, who inaugurated the program, lauded its economic and environmental benefits, stating that converting food waste into affordable and locally produced feed eases the financial strain on farmers, reduces landfill pressure, and helps lower organic emissions across the governorate. The project is implemented in collaboration with the ministries of Environment, Education, and Social Development. //Petra// HA
